What is Continuity Editing?

Continuity editing is the predominant style of film editing and video editing in the post-production process of filmmaking of narrative films and television programs. The purpose of continuity editing is to smooth over the inherent discontinuity of the editing process and to establish a logical coherence between shots.

In most films, logical coherence is achieved by cutting to continuity, which emphasizes smooth transition of time and space. However, some films incorporate cutting to continuity into a more complex classical cutting technique, one which also tries to show psychological continuity of shots. The montage technique relies on symbolic association of ideas between shots rather than association of simple physical action for its continuity.

Continuity Mistake in a Scene – Die Another Day (2002)

In this film you clearly see Halle Berry getting a nasty cut in her fight scene with Rosamund Pike. Although in the end scene with Pierce Brosnan her cut has vanished. Seems like they forgot that fight..

What is the 180 degree rule?

In film making, the 180-degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene.

What is cross cutting?

Cross-cutting (also called split-screen) is a drama technique borrowed from the world of film editing, where two scenes are intercut to establish continuity. In drama and theatre the term is used to describe two or more scenes which are performed on stage at the same time.

What is matching on action?

Cutting on action or matching on action refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot’s action. A common example is a man walking up to a door and reaching for the knob.

What is eye line match?

An eyeline match is a film editing technique associated with the continuity editing system. It is based on the premise that the audience will want to see what the character on-screen is seeing.

How to do Video – Using Continuing Editing

Evaluation:

  • Objective of the task?

The objective of the task was to make a video based around how to do something, whilst showing continuity in the video.

  •  Effectiveness of the group work?

The group worked well. We came to a decision of what we wanted to film and who was doing what.

  • What skills did you learn through this task?

I learnt how to use different effects with photos on premier pro.

  • What are the problems faced using your skills and how did you solve them?

Problems faced was being on the spot on what to film, but we came together on what to do as a team.

  • What was the feedback from your tutor and peers?

They liked how we speed certain things up, so it wouldn’t long the video. As well as the fact they thought the video didn’t throw them off, it flowed together, and followed the 180 degree rule.

  • Areas for improvement;

Be more cautious on how you spell things!!!!

  1. You have produced a very effective continuity exercise. I really enjoy watching your work.
You have followed the rule of 180, and rule of matching on action edit.
You need to develop further skills in evaluating your work. Make sure to use right terminology and give more explanation of what you have tried to achieve.
You have also produced a good research on different type of editing continuity techniques, but have not reference you resources of information. Please make sure to reference your work using Harvard Referencing system.
